THE THIRD MILLENNIUM BEGINS ON 1 JANUARY 2001
There is no historical year zero in our Christian Era. Our calendar begins on 1 January of the year 1. The first century lasts from 1 January of the year 1 until 31 December of the year 100. The second century starts on 1 January 101. The 20th Century begins on 1 January 1901 and ends on 31 December 2000. The 21st century then begins on 1 January 2001.

** These days do not exist in our time reckoning! They are omitted in the calendar to let the spring begins again on the right time. The spring was then ten days behind the astronomical seasons. It was also prevented that the farmers began to late with planting and seeding of the crops. |
On 15 October 1582 begins our recent renewed calendar with a year of 365 days and with every 4 years a leap year, with exception of the centurial years, who are not divisible by 400. The centurial years 1600 and 2000 are leap years and the centurial years 1700, 1800 and 1900 not.
New is the omitting of the ten days between 4 and 15 October 1582 and moreover the omitting of every time three leap years in four centuries.
This new calendar was introduced by pope Gregory and is called the gregorian calendar. Before that we had the julian calendar, introduced by Julius Ceasar in the first century before Christ, with a leap year every time the year is exactly divisible by four.
In the Catholic countries the new calendar was used mostly immediately and in the Protestant countries sometimes much later. In the southern Netherlands Christmas 25 December followed immediately after 14 December 1582.
The Protestant parts of Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands followed the new rules in 1700, England and Sweden in 1752. Russia, Greece and a few other countries with an orthodox christian belief followed as late as in the 20th century. In the former Ethiopia, with an orthodox christian belief under the former Emperors, rules so far as I know until now the julian calendar. Take care then to book your dates for holidays there.
